My Thoughts

Names

Today as parents choose the name for that new arrival they can buy books, go online and research everything about the name. Some keep it a secret until the baby is born and others share the name, its meaning, and why they chose it. I find it all very interesting, and I enjoy hearing the journey that parents take to choose a name for their baby.

I read recently how my parents chose my name. Back in the day there was a country singer Brenda Lee. They both liked the name Brenda but my middle name is Ann after my paternal grandmother. Now my brother Brian is named after an advertisement on the side of a truck! Yep, my Mom saw the name, liked it and Brian it is.

Everyone has a name; but why that name? How did your parents come to choose your name? For some it’s a family name, a grandparent, aunt, uncle, best friend. They like the sound of it or the meaning. As a teacher for many years I learned how to spell the same name in many different ways. When your name is mispronounced or misspelled you’re offended because it’s your name.

What has always amazed me is that God knows the name of every human being. He has since the beginning of time. I mean – I have two children and I would get their names mixed up. But not God. He knows my name; He was there at the very beginning when I was being “knitted together” in my mother. Not only that He loves me so much He sent his son Jesus to die and be resurrected for me. How fantastic is that! He not only knows my name and your name, He knows us intimately.
