Growing up in the Midwest, January has always meant cold, snowy and cloudy. The many layers to put on just to go out the door. The warm layers when staying inside while holding a hot cup of something to keep you warm. In January I enjoy the winter. Ask me again in March about winter and you’ll get a totally different answer.
Growing up, our house was near a lake so during Christmas and after, I would grab the shovel and my ice skates, clear my own skating rink, and for a while enjoy the beauty of winter.
One Christmas my brother Brian and I received a toboggan. The snow was perfect with a thin layer of ice and we flew down the hill. It was so exciting! The hard part was climbing the hill again. When we came in Mom had hot chocolate waiting with leftover cutout Christmas cookies.
Now as an adult my MS keeps me indoors but when I see the rosy cheeks of my Grandchildren and their sparkling eyes as they come in from playing in the snow I remember how that feels, and it brings me great joy.
January, I do enjoy your winter beauty, the warm socks, the snuggly sweaters and the warmth of a fireplace. I’m thankful that I live in a place where I can enjoy all four seasons.
